The 20th Anniversary

A total of 3 volumes of the “Kiyoshi Saito Collection”
will be published.

2017 will commemorate both the 20th anniversary of Kiyoshi Saito’s death and the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Kiyoshi Saito Museum of Art.
With backing from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo, a special exhibition “Munch & Kiyoshi Saito” will
be held In 2017, however that is not all.
To commemorate this milestone year, a total of three volumes of the “Kiyoshi Saito Collection” that reflects back on the 70 years of Saito’s work will be published.

In addition to the roughly 900 art works owned by the Kiyoshi Saito Museum of Art, this collection will also include another hundred or so of Saito’s work from the Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art and from private collections.
The collection will cover a wide range of Saito’s art including unpublished works.
Volume 1 covers 261 pieces ranging from Saito's initial work in 1928 up to 1962. The art work from this period shows a fusion of western art style and the Japanese style visual expressionism which can be said to be the origin of Saito’s art style.
Volume 2 spans Kiyoshi Saito`s collection of 373 works from 1963-1979. Here we can see his lack of confidence in his own abilities as he strives to improve his expression through Collagraphy, in order to create a unique fusion of styles. Focusing on the techniques of western modern art and traditional Japanese presentation, he was able to change his lack of confidence into a solid conviction.

Volume 1,2 and 3 are now available for purchase at 3,500 yen each.
